Finding the right teacher for you and your family.
Updated: Sep 3, 2021
When I first started taking lessons my parents really had no idea what kind of pandora's box they were opening. This went on for 10 years. Their intention was good and I always enjoyed my lessons with all the teachers I had over the years.
Then there was that defining moment when I heard an exceptional pianist. I was blown out of the park and wondered how is this humanly possible.
You see from the time I started taking lessons at 8 until 18 I had never been exposed to such greatness!
My parents really had no idea how to choose the right one. They just choose.
About a decade later when I was a mother and my children were the right age to begin. I thought...let's give it a go again.
I found someone that I really liked..she was actually a mother of one of my son's friends, at the time. We always had a good time and I was resisting something that was put on the back burner for a while.
Then that moment happened. I met this man who blew my socks off. He happened to have been a European Concert Pianist and he had a Steinway Concert Grand in his studio.
That was it. I was in!
What I learned is that I had no idea how to move. No idea how to count. After decades of wrong practicing, I had to undo thousands of hours of incorrect practicing. Something that I didn't even know at the time.
Needless to say, it was very painful and took at least 7 years to undo terrible habits.
I wish this on no one!
There are a few key elements to finding the right teacher.
How do they connect with you or your children?
How do they play. Ask them to play something for you. You want to surround yourself with someone who understands all the is encompassed in studying the piano..or any instrument.
It's not about being a concert pianist. It's about enjoying the experience and being able to take the knowledge you acquire to apply it to anything your heart wants to study.
The Joy and Love of Music can last you a lifetime!!
